Functional Indifference. 2012. Courtney Buckingham. Final Piece.
Artist Statement
The distillation of thoughts within the sculptural object has become a major theme in the works of Courtney Buckingham. The viewer is confronted by a violent and destructive tendency, held tentatively within the still recognisable objects. Undoubtedly Courtney’s work persists in testing the functionality of the object, though it also presents a deep sensibility of form and space, making process partly irrelevant. This heightened awareness of the objects properties and presence is prompted by a simple gesture or movement, challenging the viewer’s previous experience and demanding focus. This does not so much draw attention to a certain phenomena but instead gives way for a new appreciation and relationship to space, materials and surrounding history. The ambiguous drawings exist alongside these sculptural forms, creating play from the tension between 2D and 3D. There is a suggestion of a light handed conversation, creating an interesting approach to the existence of form.
